It is difficult to know for certain the circumstances surrounding the birth of the Daiquiri Cocktail. However, many agree on its creator, Jennings Stockton Cox & its birthplace, the iron mines of Daiquiri in Cuba.

The American engineer, who came to Daiquiri following the American-Spanish war of 1898, established a Bacardi ration for the workers in the iron mines.

Later, using ingredients available to him, he experimented with different blends to finally produce a Daiquiri.

Nobody knows who invented the Margarita. It’s a mystery cocktail. But it’s very likely that it involves a beautiful woman.

According to cocktail historian David Wondrich @splificator , author of @imbibe , best guess is that the margarita as we know and love it evolved from a cocktail known as the “daisy.”

This mix of alcohol, citrus juice, and grenadine served over shaved ice, was popular during the 1930s and 40s. There were gin daisies and whiskey daisies and, eventually, inevitably, tequila daisies, the original recipe for which called for tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and a splash of soda.

At some point, this Mexican-influenced Daisy became known by its Spanish name, Margarita, which means daisy in Spanish.

The recipe of the Whiskey Sour was first written down in the 1862 book ‘The Bartender's Guide’ by Jerry Thomas. However, the basic recipe was known for over a century prior.

Sea travel from Europe to North America, was not simple. Food would spoil and water wasn’t exactly considered safe.

Professional sailors suffered from scurvy and other malnutrition and sea-sicknesses, up until Vice Admiral Edward Vernon of England began mixing a few ingredients together to serve to his crew.

Sailors had a ration of limes and lemons to prevent scurvy, and liquor for something safe to drink. To prevent a ship full of intoxicated shipmates, the liquor was watered down and lemon or lime juice was added. Hence, we have a very early version of the Sour.

The sailors then brought this concept to shore and eventually the basics of the sour cocktail were refined to what we know it as.
